Our Capabilities

Utilising specialist 3D and advanced computerised software, we can create intricate shapes in armoured and high-strength steels like Armox®, Hardox®, and Strenx®. Our capacity allows us to cut materials up to 300mm thick with a bed size of 7.3m x 2.4m x 200mm or 4m x 2m x 300mm. We achieve superior precision, matching machined tolerances of +/- 0.1mm, which is crucial for ballistic plate fabrication. With three state-of-the-art water jet cutting machines on-site, we excel in serving niche markets such as Defence, Aerospace, Offshore, and Automotive. The water jet cutting process uses no heat, resulting in clean, burr-free cuts without damaging the material’s properties. This is the ideal method for maintaining the structural integrity of Armox® plates. We can also provide a stacked cutting service, enabling us to cut various sheets or parts to size in a single pass for efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Water jet cutting works by forcing water through a tiny orifice at extremely high pressures. For hard materials, the water stream draws in a granular abrasive into a mixing chamber, creating an abrasive jet that erodes the material. WEC Water jet cutting systems utilise this abrasive water jet process to cut materials like Armox steel using a cold cutting method, which is essential to preserve the material’s properties by avoiding heat distortion or cracking.

The cutting speed of a water jet is highly variable, influenced by factors like material type, thickness, water pressure, and the abrasive used. For a material like 1-inch thick stainless steel, the speed may be in the range of 4 to 6 inches per minute (0.10 to 0.15 meters per minute). When cutting high-hardness materials such as Armox steel, the speed is generally slower than for softer metals to ensure a high-quality, precise cut.

Yes, our water jet machines are highly effective for cutting steel, particularly when an abrasive material is added to the water stream. Our Waterjet machines can cut various metals including Armox, Hardox, Strenx, carbon steel, stainless steel, and titanium, offering a clean edge without heat-affected zones. For extremely hard materials such as Armox steel, which is used for armor, abrasive water jet cutting is the preferred and highly accurate method because it prevents the material from losing its ballistic and bulletproof properties due to heat.
